January 9

Most of us have a spiral and have chosen a scripture to get started by now! Beth Moore's blog has some tips for memorizing and learning scripture. It is shared through three short videos but well worth the time to watch. She uses an acrostic inspired by

" Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." Romans 12:2 NIV

R - read it - over, and over, and over - outloud! Through listening you will become more familiar with it

E - examine it - Look for ways you can remember it or parts of it. Is it written in first person with I, second person with you, or third person with he or she? Alphabetical order of words?

N - need it - Choose a verse you personally need, not a scripture your loved one needs and you want to repeat outloud around them a bunch. :) This is for YOU!!

E - echo it - Read it aloud, but then look away and try to say it (echo it!).

W - wield it - Scripture is the sword of the spirit, and we need to learn how to use it! Don't memorize and tuck away, use it against the power of darkness!

  1. Ephesian 4:29 is my verse.
"Do not let any unwholesome words come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful in building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."

I chose this verse because I know that a slip of the tongue can tear down a relationship, or a kind word can help in building a relationship. We should be building each other up, not tearing each other down! Those who are close enough to hear what we say, should see our walk with Christ reflected in our speech as well as our actions!

  2. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
    -Romans 8:28

I chose this verse to start with because it is on the cover of my spiral. Amazingly, this verse was on my mind on the first day of the year, before I even realized it was a bible verse. I believe that God lead Jo Anna to make this spiral for me so I would know it was him talking to me. It’s a verse that I need to reflect on when “bad” things happen and know that God has a plan for me and everything happens for a reason.

  3. I am going with Philippians 3:10.

"I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death,"
Vs. 11 continues with "and so, somehow, to attain the resurrection from the dead."

It is the first part of verse 10 that really speaks to me. What does it really mean to KNOW Christ and the power of his resurrection? I am not sure I can get my mind around what the "true power of his resurrection" really means. I take it this kind of "knowing" means more than our salvation experience. I think it is an intimate "knowing" that leads to the true power of his resurrection. I want that.

  4. I am choosing my "peace within the storm" verse:
"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33 NIV

These are words that I need to remember, as the storms of life rage around me.

  5. "But from there you will seek me and you will find me if you search after me with all of your heart and with all of your soul." Deuteronomy 4:29

I chose this verse because of the "from there" part. In this part of scripture God is warning the Jews that in the future they WILL wander from him, but that even "from there" He is waiting to welcome them back, if only they will search after Him. So, even when I am disobedient, He is waiting to welcome me back, if only I will search after him.

  6. "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God."
    Ephesians 2:8

This verse is the cornerstone of my faith. It gives me such peace to know that I am saved by my faith in Jesus Christ. Grace is an unmerited gift from God.

  7. I am joining just this week, so I am on my first verse, but will try to catch up.
    I have memorized Romans 8:1-2
"Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because in Christ Jesus the law of the spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death."
I chose to learn this verse because I am reading "The Battlefield of the Mind" by Joyce Meyer and am wanting to use this scripture as a weapon when the enemy tries to discourage me with past failures, especially repeated failures. I am discovering that I need not be bound by my failures, that progress is usually slow for a reason, and that God has designed it that way so that I can truly experience grace. Only after countless failures, can I look back at something and realize that it took God to do what I can't do. I must depend on Him for everything. I must remember that He has already won the victory for me. As women, in particular, I think that we feel that we have to fix everything, and sometimes the best thing we can do is let God be God and trust Him to take care of it. I am thankful for a God who loves me so much that He does everything for my benefit (even when I don't understand and fight doubts)and even though I don't deserve it.
